Message from Superintendent Geyer

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is with excitement that I welcome you to the 2017-18 school year! Our district will continue with its overarching theme of Rigor, Relevance and Relationships meaning students will be engaged in critical thinking and learning activities around real world issues under the caring support of the school staff.

Improving student achievement and ensuring the social and emotional well-being of EVERY student is our driving force as a district. Goals, actions and services to accomplish this are outlined in our Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) that was adopted by the school board on June 26, 2017. Development of this LCAP began in the spring with feedback from parents, teachers, students and advisory groups. The goals of this LCAP remain the same as previous years: 1) Students will graduate from high school, college and career ready; 2) Students will feel a sense of connectedness academically, socially, emotionally, and physically in their schools; and 3) Pierce Joint Unified School District will engage families and members of the greater school community as educational partners.

Some actions and services that will be newly added to the LCAP for this upcoming year include: hiring an additional 6th grade teacher to reduce class size, extending the school day for kindergarteners, aligning physical education teacher schedules to better balance class sizes in other content areas at the middle school and offering training of the Next Generation Science Standards. These actions and services are in addition to the actions and services that are currently in place.

In regards to district facilities, in November, the registered voters in our district approved Measure B, a facility bond. Projects and plans to utilize these funds are underway. At Lloyd G. Johnson Jr. High, walls that created wedge shaped computer labs between classrooms are being removed to create larger classroom space. The labs are no longer necessary due to the availability to connect to the internet wirelessly. This project will be completed prior to the start of the school year. At Pierce High School, construction is set to begin on a new multi-purpose room and central kitchen this summer with the completion of the project to be in August 2018. Additional projects proposed for the future include replacing some portable buildings with a permanent structure at Arbuckle Elementary and adding an additional locker room and weight room at Pierce High School.   Other facility projects outside of the bond funding that are taking place this summer include: new HVAC units at Arbuckle Elementary, updated lighting at all sites within the district, exterior painting of the high school and refinishing of the south gym floor and interior painting of that same gym at the high school also.

We encourage your involvement and participation in our district. Get involved by attending Back-to-School Nights, Parent-Teacher conferences, parent trainings, Open Houses, or join an advisory group. We are currently updating our district website which can be accessed at www.pierce.k12.ca.us . A priority for us this year is to have an up-to-date district calendar for easy reference on the site. Download our district mobile app as well. The website and the mobile app will be synchronized.

Let us work together for the benefit of EVERY student.

Sincerely,

Carol Geyer

Superintendent
